He not a very loving trainer, he's a bruiser and only wants the strongest pokemon on his team, and has high expectations of them. If a pokemon doesn't fit it, than he's willing to abandoned even in the blink of death, lie to have his way or put his pokemon through hardship.

With Ash and Gary, he was one of the three from Pallet Town who was chosen by Oak to have a starter and a Pokedex, his was Charmander. Sadly, his pokemon journey isn't going to be a nice one, as he only wants the strongest pokemon on his team.
