As the grandson of the Kanto region's professor, and the brother of a professional Pokémon coordinator, Gary always strived to be the best at whatever he did; whether to live up to his family's name, or just to show that he was on par with them, is up in the air. As a younger child, his closest 'friend' was Ash Ketchum, the son of the wife of a student his grandfather once mentored. Whenever he and Ash would compete, Gary always came through on the top. But there was one thing that the two wanted to compete in more than anything when they grew old enough...
