Wes isn't exactly used to people being nice to him, and gets easily uncomfortable when praised. Also, Rui is a massive weakness to him, as he cares for her as a friend.
Personality:
Wes is a rough character; mostly because of his many years as a Snagger for Team Snagem. As a former criminal, laws mean little to him, and as such, he can come off as being rude and arrogant, especially around cops and the like. While this is so, his older age means that he's more patient when it comes to handling certain situations. He also enjoys working on machines. Though, when in the presence of Rui, he's a lot more subdued and protective, and will outright brutalize anyone who tries to mess with her. And while he has a dislike for Team Snagem, he does view their leader, Gonzap, as some form of father figure.

At an early age, Wes became part of Team Snagem, a Pokémon Team that managed to find a way to steal Pokémon right from their trainers' grasps. Eventually, Wes decided to strike away from the team, but rather than telling the leader, Gonzap, that he was quitting, he blew up their base, stole a portable Snag Machine, and high-tailed it out of there.
In Phenac City, he came across a couple of thugs that had kidnapped a girl named Rui. Long story short, he trounced them and saved her. After meeting the mayor, he and Rui began journeying around the Orre region to put a stop to the evil organization known as Cipher, who Team Snagem had supplied Pokémon to.
As they journeyed, Wes grew more curious regarding Rui; even after she found out that he had been the best Snagger from Team Snagem, she stuck with him, and treated him as a friend. His Snag Machine, coupled with Rui's innate ability to sense Shadow Energy within Pokémon, proved to be a combination that put a stop to Cipher, and with Celebi's help, they purified the Shadow Pokémon Cipher had under their command.
After stopping an impostor from sullying his reputation in the region, Wes decided that, as important as Rui had become to him, he couldn't keep staying with her, if he wanted to figure out what to do for himself. With a final farewell, he left her on her own, intending to figure out just what he, a former criminal, could do with his life.
